(NON)formal: a neighborhood workshop for making house signs
The workshop of curator Petra Šebová in collaboration with architect Savka Marenić will explore the neighborhood ties and the character of the well-known Brno colony through the eyes of local people. On Saturday 27 May 2023, a workshop for the creation of temporary house signs will take place between the former workers' colony Divišova čvrt and the Lesná panel housing estate, between informal and formal urbanism in the small square in Trtílkova Street. The event builds on the long-term activity of the BUT Faculty of Architecture in the public space known as - Engaged Architecture. The workshop is primarily intended for residents of the Divišová quarter and surrounding prefab houses, but anyone with a connection to the locality and an interest in the workshop is welcome throughout the day.
The house sign, as a historical artistic element on the facades of buildings, could depict the events, stories and connections of the given place, the fictional identities of its population , or simply to help with orientation in the locality. What is the story of the two different forms of urbanism that represent the mixed neighborhood today? What unites them and what separates them? How can one perceive the community of the former colony and the community of the housing estate? And are there even two communities here?
Come and share memories and perceptions of individual spaces and create a new, informal identity for this locality. The goal is to jointly create models of house signs on a 1:1 scale. The workshop is suitable for children and adults. You can stop by anytime between 10:00 and 17:00. Participation is free. Tools, materials, refreshments will be on site. The event will be led by the architect Savka Marenic´ in the Czech language.
The (NE)formal workshop is an accompanying program of the year-long exhibition project of the Faculty of Architecture of the BUT in Brno, whose dramaturgy focuses on reflection public space in the city, interaction with the wider public and the physical movement of events outside the boundaries of the institution. The event is being held with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
We are looking forward to a weekend together!
