NON-PLACES / EXCLUSION ZONE
Photography also has its place in architecture. Architect Barbora Ponešová has long been concerned with capturing the moment in space, who, in addition to running a studio at the Faculty of Architecture at BUT, also teaches the course Photography and Architecture. Excerpts of student projects connected with the theme of spaces of zero interest have been combined into the NEMÍSTA / ZÓNA VYLÚČENI exhibition in the Mini Gallery, which can be seen until Friday, May 19, on the ground floor of the Brno School of Architecture. The exhibition will end with a dernisage and a guided tour on the last day of the exhibition from 5 p.m.
Non-places are a reflection of the lifestyle of today's people, who are no longer dependent on one geographical area and on relationships to places (Clark, 1982). Non-places are depersonalized, anonymous environments. They are not the property of their users and are meant to be consumed quickly, used in the manner for which they were intended and created, and then abandoned. Non-places, unlike places, do not give individuals the opportunity to create their own individual identity in relation to them. They do not have this identity themselves. The identity produced by the non-place is only shared by the users (Augé,1995).
The exhibition represents a cross-section of students' work within the Photography and Architecture subject, mapping places that are beyond human attention. Over the years, the assignment was approached in different ways, the image search led from typological mapping of excluded localities to finding similar neglected moments in the everyday life of each of us. The form was never predetermined. It was based on the personal mood of the photographer and also on the subject of interest. Through a gradual dialogue, the students developed a sensitivity to capture subtle and often fleeting moments on the periphery of our conscious existence. The exclusion zone is thus one of the many answers to what and why we often don't want to see and where the so-called blind spots are in our mental maps.
