Remembrance of my teacher - Obituary of Jaroslav Drápal

On Monday, December 4, at the age of 89, the long-time teacher of the FA BUT doc. Ing. arch. Jaroslav Drápal, CSc. We would like to honour his memory by publishing an obituary written by his former student and colleague - architect and teacher Marek Štěpán.
I first met Jaroslav Drápal as a complete elév, in the first year of studies at the Faculty of Architecture in Brno in the 1980s. He exuded a passion for architecture and the art of building. He was able to transfer this passion to me in a very natural way, as well as to the generation before me and the generations after me. We made constructive models out of paper. Under his guidance and a little bit of protection from the otherwise communist faculty, we were discovering new, until then unseen professional horizons.
Drápal's lectures devoted to architectural composition, to which he had gravitated all his life, were an unforgettable learning experience. It was the subject of our conversations even later. His relationship to architectural composition and studenthood was also behind his decision in his dilemma of whether to pursue his own architectural work or to teach at the faculty. He preferred, as we all know, the faculty and spent an incredible 62 years teaching there. He left a strong mark, or rather a deep furrow. I realised this at the exhibition 100 Years of Czech and Slovak Architecture in the Riding Hall of Prague Castle, where he was cited as a teacher by all contemporary renowned Moravian architects.
After seeing his structural buildings at Pellicovo in Brno and in Tišnov, I realised the coherence of his ideas, teaching and his own work. He showed constancy of opinion throughout his entire career and in the ethical sphere in all politically turbulent times, creating a kind of island of freedom in Rybářská Street. Thanks to all these things, I chose Jaroslav Drápal as my thesis supervisor and I am glad that he accepted this role at that time. I still draw on the ferment of ideas from that period to this day. Sometimes he would bring his wife Olga for consultation and we would talk to the crackle of the local steam heater.
Jaroslav Drápal was the bearer of the continuity of thought of the Brno Faculty of Architecture with reference to professors Kurial, Rozehnal and Fuchs. I hope that the school will continue to build on this legacy, which is one of the treasures of the faculty. I am happy to be a part of it.
Just a few hours before his passing, we were arranging a lecture for sophomores. I was all the more moved by the news of his death and would now like to pay my respects to him across the River Styx. I'm sure his favourite headstand can be done there too. I greet you, Jaroslav, in the land of perfect proportions, with your favourite greeting.
Sun in the Soul
