An independent jury has evaluated this year’s thesis projects. The winning projects will be on display at the TITUL 2026 exhibition
An independent jury recognized the best thesis projects from
the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology, as well as the
top three design studios. First place among the thesis projects went to Anna
Kabeláčová, second place to Marie Křížková, and third place to Veronika
Pálková. Among the design studios, the jury recognized the studios of Szymon
Rozwalka, Jan Hora, and Vítězslav Nový. The winning student projects will be on
display starting June 24 at the TITUL 2026 exhibition in the Architecture
Gallery.
Award-winning Theses and Jury Evaluations
1st Place Anna Kabeláčová: Liminality and Mutability of
Hospital Care
Anna’s thesis stands out from the average of the exhibited
projects. The very choice of the timely topic of the humanization of hospitals
and the hospital environment deserves recognition. The thesis examines hospital
care through two lenses: the mutability of the system and the liminality of
human experience. It is based on the premise that being a patient means finding
oneself in an existential liminal space—on the threshold between health and
illness, home and institution, autonomy and surrender to medical authority. The
thesis focuses on inpatient care as a “soft space,” where architecture ceases
to be a neutral backdrop and becomes an active agent in treatment.
The problem of hospital architecture is comprehensively
analyzed and evaluated from various angles. The resulting design reflects this
approach; it does not address a specific situation but proposes a variable
modular solution for inpatient care, including a methodology for situating this
structure within the hospital grounds. The thesis is executed to a high
standard in terms of both content and graphics, including the model.
2nd place Marie Křížková: Flood Resilience of Urbanized
Areas
In her thesis, the student examines the effects of flood
activity on the landscape, its causes, and its consequences for urbanized
areas. Drawing on extensively documented sources, she gathers information to
consider the extent of development and technical measures in a given area
versus preserving the natural state of the landscape with occasional flooding.
She proposes flood control measures based on the natural topography of the
terrain, retaining water in the landscape and allowing it to gradually
infiltrate and drain away.
The student selected the Valencia region as the study site.
The thesis is highly relevant and inspiring for the Brno area as well, where
the city has long been engaged in flood control measures.
The jury commended the carefully and systematically prepared
analytical section of the thesis, whose evaluation leads to conclusions that
are not only realistic for the selected site but can also serve as a model for
flood control measures in other areas. The thesis is executed to a high
standard in terms of both content and graphics, including the models.
3rd place Veronika Pálková: Water, River, Human
Conceptually, the thesis centers on the main theme of water,
river, and human, thereby laying the groundwork for a strong conceptual
approach to the work. This is evidenced by the graphically superb portfolio of
the work. The thesis responds to the physical and cultural value of the
existing landscape around Žitný ostrov and the Little Danube in Slovakia. In
several proposals for different locations, the author respects the landscape’s
inherent characteristics and emphasizes the potential of the genius loci. Their
common theme is water, peace, and quiet, leading to the physical and spiritual
purification of the human spirit. The design also constitutes a rational and
ethical intervention in the existing environment of the non-urbanized
landscape.
Award-winning studios and jury evaluation
1st place: Szymon Rozwalka Studio
The thesis projects from this studio demonstrated the
timelessness of the project brief, which reflects the supervising instructor’s
support for conceptual thinking about the given problem. A thorough analytical
theoretical section underpins the strong concept of both designs. The high
quality of the graphic presentation and models effectively conveys the main
idea of both projects. The selected topics address pressing contemporary
issues.
2nd place: Jan Hora Studio
This studio addresses current topics of reconstruction and
renovation through specific assignments and successfully engages with the
social, cultural, and physical components of the environment. The projects
utilize the potential of the original buildings while preserving the identity
of the environment with a high degree of feasibility.
3rd place: Vítězslav Nový Studio
“School as Dialogue” is a highly relevant topic. The thesis
projects feature well-developed typologies, and a great deal of work has been
put into them; however, they focus less on creating a high-quality creative
environment for pupils and students. Therefore, unfortunately, the slogan
“School as Dialogue” does not fully realize its potential.
