The Mařena Student Festival will feature music, walks around the city and inspiring guests from the Czech Republic and abroad
The Mařena Student Festival returns this year with a packed
programme that brings together architecture, urban planning, public space,
culture and music. Visitors can look forward to talks by Czech and
international guests, guided walks around Brno, discussions about the city and
its future, and evening concerts.
One of the programme’s highlights will be a lecture by Steve
Davies, a leading figure in the international placemaking movement. In 1978,
Davies helped found the Project for Public Spaces (PPS) in New York, where he
spent more than four decades working on public space designs and training
architects and urban planners. In his work, he advocates the creation of urban
spaces based on observations of everyday life and the active involvement of
local communities. The lecture will be held in honour of urban planner Eva
Staňková, who brought him to Brno in 1993 and involved him in local urban
planning activities. Davies subsequently took part, for example, in discussions
on the future of Zelný trh and in the preservation of part of the Vaňkovka site
and its transformation into a vibrant public space.
The programme will also feature a number of other
interesting guests. Art historian, heritage conservationist and lecturer at the
Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, Michal Konečný, will
guide participants along Brno’s 19th-century ring road and explain its urban
planning and historical significance. Lectures on contemporary topics in
architecture and urbanism will be given by, for example, Monika Mitášová,
Štěpán Flekna, Martina Mertová, the AOSI studio and the Henkai architekti studio.
The festival will also welcome the Slovak studio GRAU
architects, led by Andrej Olah and Filip Marčák. The architects will present
their experience with designs for public buildings, public spaces and cultural
projects. The studio is known for its emphasis on working with context, using
high-quality materials and taking a sensitive approach to the environment, for
which it has won numerous awards, including the CEZAAR and BIG SEE Awards.
The programme will also feature a talk by Martin Šnobr,
editor-in-chief of the magazine Městem na kole, who has long been dedicated
to the topics of urban cycling, public space and sustainable mobility. He will
present his perspective on how cities can create conditions for residents to
get around safely and enjoyably.
The festival will culminate on Thursday evening at the Fléda
club, where the bands Obligatne, Edův syn and Ragdoll will perform.
